2003 HYUNDAI TIBURON GS-R. The Tiburon has a slick new skin—appropriate to say, since tiburon is the Spanish word for shark—for 2003. Hyundai took this opportunity to increase some measurements: 5.5 cm for the wheelbase, 3 cm for the width, 1.5 cm for height and 5 cm for the length. The best innovation is found under the hood, which finally houses a V6 engine—the same one that’s available in the Sonata and the Santa Fe. The Tiburon remains a frontwheel drive, and is available in the Base, SE, GT and GS-R models. As are all sports cars, the Tiburon is low-slung and has a small door opening, both of which make access more difficult. In fact, one has to be fairly flexible to be able to insert oneself into this car, especially into the rear seats. The bucket seats prove very comfortable and the driver enjoys a very good driving position. Aside from that,headroom is limited for people of average height and up, while visibility is awful from ¾ behind, from ¾ forward, and toward the front right side due to the blind spot created by the side-view mirror. Further, claustrophobic people will be somewhat uneasy since the belt line is quite high. Elsewhere, the side-view mirrors that extend a bit toward the rear make life difficult for those of average height and below. Lastly, the rear spoiler can interfere with visibility out the back. It almost goes without saying that the rear seats are only for small people—and even then, just for short trips—since there is precious little headroom and legroom. Actually, this area is much more useful for storage than for passengers. The trunk is rather roomy and easily accessed thanks to the lift gate’s large opening and the reasonable liftover. Load capacity can be increased by folding down the rear seat’s 50/50-split seatback.

VW Golf GLS TDI (Manual). This is the last year for the fourth-generation Golf. So as a consequence, it gets no changes except for a software upgrade for its engine-control computer. A fifth-generation Golf went on sale in Europe in 2004, but we Americans will have to wait until 2006 to get it. There are two engine choices in the Golf. There’s the 1.9-liter turbo-diesel that makes 100 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque-available in the GL and GLS-and there’s also the familiar 2.0-liter that makes 115 hp. The Golf is a bit more expensive than its Japanese competition but offers a luxurious interior, the utility of a hatch, and a decent fun-to-drive rating. The structure is stiff, and although its engines are on the weak side, it goes down the road well enough. Since this is the current Golf’s last year, be sure to deal hard. Otherwise, wait a year for the entirely new, and more sophisticated, fifth-generation Golf. HYDRONIC 5 FORD DIESEL ENGINES Installation, Troubleshooting & Service Repair Manual. Espar’s Hydronic 5 heater offers an affordable heating solution for pick-ups. Its compact size enables a simple installation and eliminates the need for electrical plug-ins. The heater is quality engineered to provide a dependable means of heating and is capable of putting out between 8,200 to 17,100 BTU’s/hr. It features automatic heat regulation while being fuel and power efficient. The heater pumps coolant from the engine, heats it and returns it to the engine. By routing the hot coolant through the vehicles heat exchanger it is also possible to heat the interior of the vehicle. Since the heater runs on diesel fuel using 12 volt power, it is able to operate completely independent of the vehicle engine. A temperature regulating switch in the unit regulates the coolant temperature between a low of 65°C (149°F) and a high of 80°C (176°F) by automatically cycling the heater. The Hydronic 5 is controlled from the vehicle cab by a timer which can be set to come on from up to 7 days in advance.
