Moto G Android 4 4 KitKat rollout starts in UK

Motorola has confirmed the Android 4.4 KitKat rollout for the Motorola Moto G in the UK has now started.

The Moto G will be the first non-Nexus handset to receive the latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS, beating rival Android handsets to the KitKat party.

Along with Android 4.4 KitKat, the Moto G upgrade will introduce additional new software features like photo editing options for the Gallery app and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth printing support.

You’ll also receive the new version of Google Hangouts that supports integrated SMS/MMS messaging. You can set Google Hangouts to be your default SMS app in the Settings menu under Wireless > Default SMS app.

Your Moto G should notify you that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is available, but if not we advise you periodically check for system updates in the Settings menu.

The Moto G is a cracking phone available for the very reasonable SIM-free price of £135 and the Android KitKat OS will only make it even better.

Android 4.4 KitKat Features
One of the defining features of Android KitKat is its compatibility with older smartphones with less memory.

“With KitKat, we’ve slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time,” explained Google at launch.

Android 4.4 KitKat can run on smartphones with as little as 512MB of RAM, making it easier for the update to be applied to mid- and entry-level handsets.

Other Android KitKat features include voice search, prioritised contacts based on your most frequent communications and improved multitasking capabilities.

Google also checks local businesses for a match when you receive a call from an unknown number now, which is definitely a handy feature for cold callers.

Archos sees an opportunity in Windows Phone amid swamped Android market

French mobile manufacturer Archos plans to throw its beret in to the Windows Phone arena.

CEO Loic Poirier said the company will launch a handset on Microsofts gradually improving platform, joining its budget offerings on Android.

Nokia is currently earning a whopping 90 per cent of Windows Phone sales, with big hitters like LG, Samsung and HTC focusing all of their attentions on the Android operating system.

That means a potential opportunity for manufacturers a little lower on the totem pole, like Archos, outside of the densely populated Android market.

New breed rising

"We will launch a Windows Phone handset when the time is right," he told TrustedReviews before explaining its primary focus would remain with Android.

"Before anything else we are focussed on Google," he added.

Other manufacturers like Alcatel and ZTE are also planning to jump in on Windows Phone. Could we be seeing a new breed of handset makers rising on Windows Phone?

Sony Xperia i1 teased again in new leaked pics

The 20-megapixel camera touting Sony Xperia i1 has leaked online again with a new set of pictures showing its thin body.

Sony’s rumoured Xperia i1 smartphone complete with 20-megapixel rear-facing camera has emerged online again, supporting rumours that the handset will launch at the Berlin-based IFA conference in early September.

The new pictures show a black iteration of the device, compared to the white version in the previous Sony Xperia i1 picture leaks. This one also seems to have a textured backplate surrounded by an aluminium frame.

Previously referred to as codename Honami, the Sony Xperia i1 strongly resembles the existing Sony Xperia Z, Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia Z Ultra in design, packing the same thin form factor.

Sony Xperia i1 rumours

Rumoured for a September IFA launch, the Sony Xperia i1 should pack a 5.3- or 5.4-inch Full 1080p HD display with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM.

Powered by a non-removable battery somewhere between the 2,700mAh and 3,000mAh mark, the smartphone’s crowning glory will be its rear-facing camera.

The Sony Xperia i1 is rumoured to have a 20-megapixel Sony 1/1.6 Exmor RS stacked sensor paired with a Cybershot G lens, Xenon or super bright LED Flash.

It will be looking to compete with the rumoured Nokia Lumia 1020 with 41-megapixel camera tipped to launch at a New York Nokia event on July 11, as well as the recently unveiled Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom.

The Galaxy S4 Zoom has a 16-megapixel image sensor, benefitting from 10x optical zoom, integrated Xenon flash and an ISO range of 100 – 3200.

Yet to be formally launched, the Nokia Lumia 1020 should have a 41-megapixel Carl Zweiss image sensor, optical image stabilisation and a variable aperture.

Christmas Gift Ideas Best phone tablet or tech gadget for every budget

Best phone to buy this Christmas

On a budget…

Vodafone Smart Mini (£49.99)
Many ultra-budget phones are rubbish. However, the Vodafone Smart Mini, which costs just £50, is actually surprisingly good. It has a small 3.5-inch screen, but gives you all the flexibility of the Android operating system. If you really can’t afford any more, this is one of the few ultra-budget phones worth looking at.

A little classier…

Motorola Moto G (£100)
If you can afford to spend a little more, the Motorola Moto G is absolutely the SIM-free phone to buy this Christmas. It costs just £100, but has all the features of a phone that might have cost £400 earlier this year. You get a great 4.5-inch 720p screen, quad-core processor, reasonable 5-megapixel camera and Android 4.3 – a fairly up-to-date version of the mobile phone software. It’s an absolute bargain.

Best tablet to buy this Christmas

On a budget...

Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 (£129)
Back in the day you had to spend a good deal of cash to get a half-decent tablet. But that’s simply not true anymore. The Tesco Hudl has grabbed much of the limelight this year in the budget tablet world, but at the entry level zone, we’d actually recommend the 7-inch Asus MeMO PAD HD 7 over it. It has a great screen, good performance and bags of flexibility. If you can afford a bit more, the Nexus 7 2 is significantly better and much higher-res, but this remains a top-quality tablet.

A little classier...

iPad mini (£329) or iPad Air
If you’re wondering whether Apple is still king of tablet-land, it is. There are great Android tablets out there, but the superior apps selection of iOS means the iPad is still our no-holds barred tablet of choice. This year’s models are both fantastic, too. The iPad Air has a design close to that of the iPad mini, with a reduced screen surround compared to last year’s models. The iPad mini looks like it always has, but this time it has a super high-resolution Retina screen that makes the first model look positively blocky.

Best gadget to buy this Christmas

Budget choice

Nerf N-strike CS-18 (£29.99)
If you don’t mind having guns in the house, the Nerf N-strike Elite is bags of fun. It’s a battery powered Uzi that fires out foam darts in rapid succession. It has range of up to 75 feet and is sure to add a little spice to the boredom of Christmas day afternoon.

For a little more...

TomTom Multisport (£179.99)
The TomTom Multisport is probably our favourite all-round sports watch. This one isn’t just for runners either – it can also track swimming and cycling. Like all the best sport watches, it uses GPS to accurately track where you are. And it works as a watch too.

HTC One KitKat update suspended in the UK following user difficulties

UK-based HTC One owners forced to wait months for the Android 4.4 KitKat update to hit their device, are dealing with more frustration after the company pulled the update due to difficulties.

HTC One KitKat update

In a statement, the Taiwanese manufacturer said it was "temporarily suspending" the update due to the unspecified problems being experienced by users.

Some who have already downloaded the update are complaining of poor battery life, but it is unclear whether this is the extent of the difficulties.

The company told Android Central: "We are aware that a limited number of HTC users are experiencing difficulties with the KitKat update.

"As a result, all FOTA updates have been temporarily suspended. HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience and we are working hard to resolve the issue quickly."

Successor imminent

The UK was not among the first wave of European countries to receive the update in January and the company only announced the KitKat for British HTC One owners last week.

With the Ones long-awaited successor due later this month, the company will hope to have the difficulties are resolved in time for its big media event on March 25.

Archos confirms plans to enter the Windows Phone race

Archos has confirmed that it intends to enter the Windows Phone game, although says it will wait until the time is right before launching its first Microsoft-powered device.

Despite the Windows Phone OS having seen its share of the smartphone sector dramatically rise during the past 12 months, Nokia remains the primary supplier of Windows Phone handsets, with the likes of Samsung and HTC reducing their support of the platform.
Now, however, Archos has confirmed it is looking at joining the Windows Phone race, a move rival budget handset makers Alcatel and ZTE have also confirmed they are considering.

“We will launch a Windows Phone handset when the time is right,” Archos CEO Loic Poirier said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.

Although adding that the company sees the Windows Phone market as now mature enough to enter following a number of years of gradual growth, Poirier has said Archos will retain Android as its primary focus for its smartphone and tablet efforts.

Speaking on how the company will split its resources between the two operating systems, the Archos head added: “Before anything else we are focussed on Google.”

God of Blades Android Game Review

God of Blades: A cutting edge game which is also beautifully stylised art

It takes a lot to stand out from the crowd nowadays and every decent game has its distinctiveness – the general rule of thumb is that a game has to look good.  On AGR we’ve come across many games which are great eye candy, but none are truly as artistic as God of Blades.  This game rips out the frame of normal visualisations and immerses you into another realm.  On the one hand you have a swipe centric game whereby you’re slashing your way to victory and on the other hand your mind is being blown away by the artistic dialogues and 70s album art.

The game itself is amazingly simple:  Four different gestures will control your running king.  You have one block action and three different slashes which differ in terms of attack timing and how long they leave your player exposed.  A good parry can have you beheading your foe, but a badly timed swing could also lead to your own demise.  The special moves in the game are triggered by a button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.  Once the power is activated, then the sword’s abilities are used.  Herein lies the little titbit which keeps player coming back for more action.  As you play through the rounds – then you’re able to unlock different types of weapons which have unique attributes.

If we were being really honest then the main game mechanic isn’t really enough to keep a player captivated.  But the White Whale Games’ creative skill in literature also draws people in.  For those with patience then they’ll be able to see the deeper inner meaning… (whilst the uncouth like me would just skip through the scenes!)

The low down

Yes, it is a stunning game.  Yes, a lot of game review sites have raved on about it.  Yes, it does provide good excitement and, yes, it delivers instant action gameplay.  But is it worth buying?  If you have money to spare, then reward the developers upfront and then play the game.  But if you’re a tight fisted student… then this game probably isn’t for you.  An active player would complete the game less than a couple of hours and then would realise there are many other games out there which would have kept them occupied for much longer periods of time.

Rating 3.5/5 Although God of Blades is a true artistic masterpiece, it also has bugs littered throughout the game which detract from the experience.  It is a fun package, but unfortunately the four regions of fighting (in story mode) just aren’t enough to satisfy paying customers.

God of Blades Tips and Tricks

  • Unless you play the eternal runner game its not possible to unlock all the swords.  You only get to win about four swords from the story mode.  Therefore you need to put effort into picking the best sword.
  • We recommend you get the Starwind or the Void Cleaver.
  • The Void Cleaver will sap alot of damage from your opponents and its a great attack against bosses when you’re in a pinch and you need to finish the round quickly.
  • The Starwind is the other insanely good sword.  Its lightweight so you swing it faster and you can often get first strike against the computer.  The special power works perfectly if you land your hits successfully.
  • The Darkstar is a logical sounding sword and it probably good in the Eternal mode.  But as general usage its too slow and clunky so you’ll rarely get first strike.
