Moto X will not launch on July 11 confirms Motorola

The Moto X will not be launching at a Motorola press event on July 11, because no such event ever existed.

Motorola has confirmed that there is no press event occurring on July 11, so we won’t be seeing the Moto X this week, or any other Android devices the smartphone manufacturer was reportedly launching on Thursday.

A teaser page launched by Motorola confirmed the Moto X smartphone last week, followed shortly a product page and an image with two people in the shape of an X and a I. This was taken to mean something was happening on July 11.

This picture, combined with several other rumours including one from tech broadcaster and blogger Leo Laporte, suggested that Motorola was holding an exclusive press event to launch its eagerly awaited flagship handset.

Apparently the event on July 11 is a private affair being held by Guy Kawasaki, a former Apple employee who recently made the move to Motorola. He is holding a private gathering for friends, with no product announcements or launches.

Moto X Rumours

The recently launch Moto X advertising campaign revealed that the smartphone will be the first that “you can design yourself”. It is expect that users will have access to a basic outline of a smartphone similar to the Google Nexus 5 to use and will then be able to create their own casing.

“The first smartphone designed, engineered and assembled in the USA is coming,” reads the Moto X news sign up page. “It’s also the first smartphone that you can design yourself. Because today you should have the freedom to design the things in your life to be as unique as you are.”

The Moto X is said to pack a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768p resolution display powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU.

Best iPad stylus 6 reviewed and rated

As children, all of us shared great delight in covering our tiny paws with various colored pigments to create fridge bound masterpieces.

As you grow and develop into an artist, youre taught to pick up a brush, pencil or charcoal stick, and a whole world of mark-making opens up.

Today, creating works of art is a single tap away with some mind-blowing iPad and iPhone art apps such as Brushes, ArtRage, SketchBook Pro and Penultimate, but for many artists, reverting to using a finger to paint is a huge step backwards.

We figured that it was time to recognize that for some iPad owners, an iPad stylus is a vital part of their iOS experience.

Great product design is about creating something instinctive and intuitive to use, so that it quickly becomes a natural extension of a person. In the case of a stylus, the basic requirements are a pen-like handle and tip, but take a look at some like the AluPen and you see that both have aimed to tap into the artists experience, evoking the familiar by emulating their real-world art tools.

Art apps make the perfect testing ground for putting these iPad styluses through their paces. Youre more likely to spend prolonged periods of time holding a stylus when taking your iPad to a life-drawing session or for some plein-air painting.

1. Kensington Virtuoso Touch

Price: £15 GBP / $25 USD
Kensington marries two worlds in style with the Virtuoso Touch. Its slim profile, satin textured body and clipped lid work together to create a comfortable, assured feel. And the rubber tip, while not the most stable, is sufficiently pressure-sensitive for diagramming. Pop the lid to reveal a handy metallic ball point for when touchscreen just isnt liberating enough.
  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk

2. Truglide Pro Precision Stylus

Price: £20 GBP / $30 USD
The aluminium body of the TruGlide Pro resembles a regular pen, rocks a classic pocket clip, and feels well balanced when gripped. But its the bulbous mesh tip that sets this stylus apart. Its made of fine microfibre strands that compress against the touchscreen and allow for beautifully controlled movement. A paintbrush-like replacement tip is also available for that uniquely artistic flourish.
  • Buy from lynktec.com

3. Wacom Bamboo Stylus Solo

Price: £20 GBP / $20 USD
Wacom clearly took notes from the humble pen in designing the Bamboo Stylus Solo, a beautifully weighted device with an elegant satin-texture metal casing. A silver detachable lid with classic breast-pocket clip fits firmly on both ends for a traditional scholarly feel, while its removable 6mm tip combines fine-edge finesse with agile responsiveness. Whether notetaking or drawing, the Solo is a pleasure to use.
  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk

4. Studio Neat Cosmonaut

Price: £23 GBP / $25 USD
Dont be put off by the astronomical dimensions of Studio Neats rubber-grip stylus. The Cosmonaut is great for scribbling and sketching, plus its perfectly weighted for both small and large hands, though its exactness may prove wanting. However, what it lacks in fine-grained precision it makes up for in robustness, with a bulbous tip that might well outlive the device it daubs.
  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk

5. Just Mobile Alupen

Price: £20 GBP / $25 USD
The stubby yet comfortable to hold Alupen is reminiscent of a crayon, and maintains a similarly balanced weight thanks to its rubber core and aluminium casing, which prevents rolling due to its hexagonal shape.

Controlling the glide of the bubble tip across a touchscreen is a breeze, but those seeking finegrained sensitivity for line art drawing should perhaps opt for a slimmer profile pen.
  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk

6. MediaDevil Magicwand

Price: £15 / $20
MediaDevil has designed this affordable stylus with iOS devices specifically in mind, as evinced by a detachable lanyard that plugs into the headphone socket to keep it secure (though we found its presence irksome when drawing). The diameter and weight of the clipped pen makes it extremely comfortable to use, and the fine rubberised tip is arguably the most responsive of the styluses we tested.
  • Buy from Amazon.co.uk

Nexus 5 now a mega bargain as retailer slices 16GB model down to 240

If you thought the high-spec Google Nexus 5 was a decent deal at £300, then the deepest price cut yet will knock your socks off.

Independent retailer Carphone Warehouse is now selling the 16GB handset for just £240 in black, red and white.

Red and black are available now, but the white model is listed as pre-order and will be ready to ship on February 27.

The 4G LTE handset will arrive with a 5-inch full HD 1080p display, with 445ppi, as well as the very latest the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Cutting edge specs

Meanwhile, the presence of a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, with 2GB RAM in the engine room, makes it a match for most high-end handsets on the market.

The camera comes in at 8-megapixels, while the manufacturer LG also packed in a 2300mAh battery promising 17 hours of talk time.

Our review late last year commented: "Theres a minimalist charm to the Nexus 5 thats hard to resist. Its comfortable to hold, the display looks great, its extremely fast, and it never slips up or stutters. This is Googles invitingly priced vision of a premium Android smartphone."

For £240? Thats smartphone finesse money (usually) cant buy.

iPhone 5 more popular than Samsung Galaxy S4 says report

Apple’s iPhone 5 is more popular than the Samsung Galaxy S4, latest figures based on UK sales figures of the two smartphones have suggested.

According to the monthly uSwitch Mobile Tracker which monitors smartphone sales, pre-orders and live searches, the iPhone 5 has retained the crown as the UK’s most popular smartphone for a fourth consecutive month while the flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 could only achieve third. Bookended by the two high-end handsets is the aging iPhone 4S.

“Samsung really caught lightning in a bottle with the Galaxy S3, delivering an affordable and appealing iPhone alternative at the perfect moment,” Ernest Doku, a telecoms expert with uSwitch stated. “The Galaxy S4 has so far failed to grab the attention of smartphone fans in quite the same way.”

He added: “The fact the S4 is tracking below analysts’ expectations could explain why the South Korean giant has brought the launches of its Galaxy S4 Zoom, S4 Active and S4 Mini to the fore - a trio of smartphones targeting specific sectors of the market with a laser-like focus.

“Its strategy has always been to dominate the market with multiple devices, rather than focusing on a single effort and, thus far, it has proven a very successful approach.”

Earlier this week it was claimed that Samsung has shipped 20 million Samsung Galaxy S4 handsets to date, although global sales of the Android 4.2.2 device have been considerably lower than early analyst expectations. Concerns have remained around Samsung Galaxy S4 sales despite the Korean manufacturer recording record quarterly profits.

With Samsung and Apple dominating the UK’s top ten most popular smartphones, the 8GB iPhone 4 is reportedly the nation’s fourth most popular phone for June 2013, with the Samsung Galaxy S3 in fifth. With a further three Samsung handsets lining up in the top ten, the Samsung Galaxy Ace, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini sit in spots eight through ten respectively.

“The iPhone’s assured position of three spots in the top ten speaks volumes of the longevity and enduring appeal of Apple handsets,” Doku stated. “Three years is a lifetime in smartphone terms, and few devices can hold their own in terms of features today. However, the iPhone 4 – released back in June 2010 – is now available from as little as £15 per month, making it not only a fantastic device, but also incredible value for money.”

Completing the month’s top ten, the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z sit in positions six and seven respectively.

WhatsApp Alternatives Six instant messaging apps

Facebook just annnounced its plan to buy WhatsApp for $19bn, leaving some users fearing the worse for the instant messaging service. Will Mark Zuckerberg take the best features from the hugely popular application and build it into its existing Facebook Messenger app or leave it relatively untouched? Only time will tell.

If you are not willing to wait to find out, and Facebook’s big spender attitude is enough to convince you to contemplate ditching the instant messaging service, here are six WhatsApp alternatives to try out instead.

1. Viber

Platforms: iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry, Mac and Windows

Viber was recently bought for £540m by Japanese company Rakuten, which also owns Kobo and Wuaki.TV. It offers free calls, texts and picture sharing across platforms. It even gets you free international calls as long as the other person has the app installed. You can use your phone number to ring other Viber users so there’s no need to set up a separate profile, and ViberOut is an additional credit-based service letting you make calls to non-Viber users.

Price: Free

2. Skype

Platforms: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8

King of video calling Skype also supports a comprehensive instant messaging that works across most mobile devices. It is also deeply integrated into Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 smartphones and tablets. Instant messaging doesn’t currently work on TVs, although it does on the Xbox One where you can also use the SmartGlass mobile app to type out messages. Unlike WhatsApp it doesn’t use your phone number as your indentifier so you need a Skype profile to get the most out of it.

Price: Free

3. Line

Platforms: Windows, Max, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, FireFox OS

The Japanese-based instant messaging and voice call service Line has recently added video call support. There’s also support for group chats and you can add new Line users by simply ‘shaking devices together’. To make chatting more playful, there are emoticons and stickers to insert into messages. When you get bored of messaging, you can also see who can rack up the highest score on the Bejeweled clone LINE game.

Price: Free

4. Samsung ChatOn

Platforms: Android, iOS, PC

Samsung’s answer to WhatsApp and BBM is all about instant messaging so there’s no voice calling or group video chats just yet. It does support texts, MMS-style messaging, video sharing, music sharing and location sharing. To make use of the trusty S-Pen you get with a Galaxy Note 3 you can also send handwritten notes and drawings. If you have a Samsung Galaxy S4 or any Samsung smartphone or tablet for that matter, ChatOn will import existing contacts to initiate individual and group chats.

Price: Free

5. Google Hangouts

Platforms: iOS, Android, Chrome, PC

Google’s own instant messaging service continues to improve, with recent support for SMS integration, animated GIFs and location sharing added. On top of that it also offers video calling, photo sharing, emojis and group conversations over voice or video. Unlike WhatsApp, using it is entirely dependent on a having a Google account so it’s not tied to your number. This lets it unify conversations across iOS and Android devices easily, making it a little easier to migrate to.

Price: Free

6. BBM

Platforms: BlackBerry, iPhone, Android

Last but by no means least is BBM. BlackBerry’s instant messaging service has recently introduced iPhone and Android apps to let it work across platforms. It also offers free voice calls that work via its BBM Voice service. BBM contacts can also see your location and you can share voice photos and voice notes too. Group chat is still a key feature letting you talk with up to 50 friends plus there are loads of emoticons to fill up the dead time in conversation.

Moto G All About Development XT1033

I recently bought Motorola Moto G from FlipKart (16 GB) and rooted it within 5 minutes after it came. I tried many experiements and I know how to unbrick it, downgrade it and do anything about it. I will show you some questions that you want to know and no one is telling.
I have Motorola Moto G XT1033 so all aswers will be for this device only. If you have any other variant of Moto G then also you can see, but it is exclusively for Moto G XT1033.
first I will start questions and answers related to the OTA!

I have unlocked Moto G XT1033 Bootloader, and it has CWM Recovery. Can I flash the OTA now?

No! You cant! You need to have stock recovery to flash OTA because the stock recovery has the partition layout..

I have unlocked Moto G XT1033 Bootloader, and with stock recovery. Can I flash the OTA?

No! I tried it! I unlocked my bootloader and flashed stock recovery. Then I tried updating it with OTA, but I failed! It shows "error" in the stock recovery and is again in the JB version.

I have stock recovery and I locked my bootloader after unlocking it. Can I flash OTA now?

Yes, I tried this only! It works.

I have XT1033, and I heard people saying that the SIM is not working in the Kit Kat ROM, is that true?

NO! It is only for US users and others. I am an Asian I didnt face any bug like Airplane mode, NO network loss, no nothing!

I have Moto G, and I flashed the OTA! I want to downgrade Moto G XT1033 to 4.3. Can I do it?

Yes, you can downgrade Moto G after flashing 4.4 Kit Kat OS (OTA). I have made a script for this. You can also make one for you! Just remove lines with "Primary GPT" erorrs in the flashall.bat/flashall etc.

I am getting version downgraded for primary-gpt error while downgrading my Moto G

Yes, this is a common error. Just flash the GPT file and flash other files. Then reboot it. It will work. Make sure to wipe the userdata.

I dont want to upgrade my Moto G to Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat but the notification is downloading it! I even tried to Force Close it, but it opens again!

Hmm. Use Titanium Backup PRO application and freeze Moto G OTA application!

Where is OTA being downloaded?

In the /cache partition.

Now lets talk about the Kit Kat update

I have upgraded to Android 4.4.2 Kit Kat update. I want to know where is the option to mount OTG cable?

Go to the Storage option from the main menu of Settings.

In Kit Kat, there are more applications than the Android 4.3 AND ALSO IT LAGS IN KIT KAT!

Yep, I faced some lags on the stock UI of KK. I disabled those applications which uses more RAM.

Why there is no Developer options in Kit Kat? I want to use the ART!

There is a Developer option menu, but disabled. Just tap 7 times on Build Number to get it.

Now lets go the Bootloader

If I unlock my bootloader, will it void my warranty?

Yes, sure. When you unlock the bootloader, you enter a code in the Motorolas website. And when you press the button, theres your warranty gone. Also there is a QFuse in the device which burns itself while unlocking the bootloader and making it un-burn is physically impossible.

Can I lock my devices bootloader again?

Yes you can. I tried it 2-3 times.
Type fastboot oem lock begin
now flash the stock images (system, userdata, logo etc.) and then type
fastboot oem lock
It will lock your Moto G.

Can I get my warranty back after I unlocked Moto Gs bootloader?

In Europe, Motorola accepts the devices with unlocked bootloader and fixes the issue until they prove that the issue was caused due to the unlocking of Bootloader. In America, issues are solved even after unlocking the bootloader.

I tried selecting options in the recovery with the power buttons, but it fails to do so. Why?

Because you need to press the volume UP button to select any option! Power button will make it boot normal.

After locking my devices bootloader, can I root it or can I root my device in locked bootoader (Moto g)?

No. None of the tools will work with this device. You need to flash CWM or a Custom Recovery to root it, but for clockworkmod or TWRP, you need to unlock the bootloader!

Now lets talk about the Custom ROMs.,the Stock ROM and Custom Kernels

I have Moto G XT1033 (Asian version). Can I flash CyanogenMod 11 ROM and get the network working?

Nah! I tried flashing the ROM, but failed. I even tried flashing Kit Kat modem file through Bootloader.

I have Moto G XT1033 (Asian Version), and can I flash the Paranoid ROM in it and get the network working?

NO. Again, the upper case.

HOW the hell to get network work in the CyanogenMod ROM or Paranoid!!!?

Flash American firmware (with single sim) and then flash the CM11 ROM. Also flash the Modem file. It will work now.

Will CyanogenMod ever add Moto G XT1033 support in CyanogenMod ROM?

Yes. CyanogenMods team said that they will soon make CM11 ROM for Moto G XT1033.

Is there any ROM which works with Moto G XT1033?

Yes. Custom ROMs made by users should work with this device. Make sure you try only ROMs of Moto G XT1033.

I hope these questions are enough and you are satisfied with them? If no then you can comment below to ask more questions about the Moto G XT1033 (or any other variant of it!)

From where to get Stock ROM of My Moto G? I cant find it anywhere!

You can get the Stock Firmware of Moto G from here: Click HERE and for more firmwares, go HERE.

Is Faux Kernel working on Moto G XT1033? Whatabout features and AnTuTu?

Nope, you cant run Faux in your Moto G XT1033. I dont know why, but in stock ROM it doesnt run. You need to flash a single SIM ROM over this device and then the kernel will work fine. I was getting Phone application Force Close and even the network bars was not showing the stats of signal.

Now lets go to Misc:

Can I install Xposed Framework?

Yes, it works quite good with Moto G. I am running it.

Does Gravity Box runs in KitKat? Any issue?

Yes, it runs in KitKat. Only one issue. And that is when you enable full screen call, it doesnt work until you press "End" button. In short it is of no use (Full Screen Option.)

What about Greenify? It also works with Moto G (Xposed?)

Hmm. Greenify is working without any error and is optimizing my applications!

Google Nexus brand to be scrapped in favour of Play Edition devices in 2015

Google could scrap the Nexus line in favour of focusing on Play Edition devices from 2015 onwards.

Play Edition hardware could get Google’s entire focus in 2015, with the Nexus line completely closed down next year.

According to a tweet from notorious tech tipster Eldar Murtazin, editor of MobileReview, the Google Nexus 5 will be one of the last Nexus devices ever.

“Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 ;) Yes – this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded)”, said Murtazin in a tweet.

Later, he added that Google would reveal "2 or 3" more Nexus devices this year, but "later it will [be] gone".

Instead of the Nexus brand being reimagined as Play Edition, it seems Google will scrap the Nexus line entirely and the Play Edition name will be rebranded.

So far, we’ve seen Play Edition versions of the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4, but Google could expand this in the very near future.

The Play Edition devices are a vanilla Android version of existing handsets, and from the tweet it seems like this practice will be taken forward rather than Google’s own smartphone and tablet line.

Perhaps Google is trying to soothe Android device rivals like Samsung and HTC with this rumoured move, especially as Nexus products tend to be the more popular choice due to very competitive pricing.

Google may well be relying on Motorola to make competitive devices rather than doing it itself, especially with the likes of the Motorola Moto G.

Murtazin has often proved to offer very accurate early information , but this may be a curveball too huge to be accurate.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to feature advanced handwriting recognition patent suggests

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 should feature advanced handwriting recognition, according to a new patent filing.

A new Samsung patent filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office suggests the company is looking to introduced advanced handwriting recognition in the next-generation of its Galaxy Note devices.

One of the most defining features of the Galaxy Note series is the S Pen stylus. Of course, the S Pen is no ordinary stylus, but actually unlocks new features for its related smartphone or tablet.

This really came to the fore with the latest Samsung Galaxy Note 3 smartphone and the latest line of Note tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2.

Special stylus features like Action Memo, Screen Write, S Note and Pen Window may only be the start of Samsung’s plans for the S pen.

A new Samsung patent filing describes a way of unlocking your Note device with your handwriting. It seems that your Note smartphone or tablet will only unlock if it recognises your particular scrawl, rather than a fingerprint or iris scan.

You’ll need to register your handwriting first in order to do so though.

Of course, those of you familiar with the Note series will know this has already been implemented with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Note 3.

However, this will be expanded in order to allow you to perform commands from the lock screen, just by writing it.

The patent uses one example of writing “call mom” using the S Pen, which will simultaneously unlock the device using handwriting recognition and then call your mum for you.

This may well be one of the new features introduced with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 when it is launched later this year around September.

Vodafone hides crafty PAYG price hike behind simplified per minute charges

Vodafone has angered its UK customers by announcing a switch from per-second to per-minute call charges, which are likely to cost subscribers more money.

From August 1, the Guardian reports, if a Vodafone pay as you go customer makes a call to a landline or mobile lasting, for example, 1:02, they will be charged for the two minutes.

In real terms that means a call that previously cost 26p will now cost 50p - a 92 per cent price hike.

The struggling operator is, of course, dressing this up as a benefit for its subscribers, claiming the simplified charges will help users know exactly how many minutes they have left in their accounts.
Gee. Thanks, guys!

Straightforward price hike

A post on the Vodafone website reads: "Calls on Pay as you go are getting simpler from 1 August 2013. No more complicated pricing by the second – just clear, straightforward per minute charges.

"So if your call is a minute and 37 seconds long, itll be charged as two minutes. That way, youll always know exactly how many minutes you have left."

Posters on the Vodafone support forum called the move "patronising," while others accused the network of insulting the intelligence of its customers.

One post read: "Please dont patronise us. This is being introduced to make more money for Vodafone, pure and simple. It doesnt make anything simpler other than the fact that PAYG customers will essentially pay more for calls."

LG G Pro 2 camera to be 13 megapixel OIS offering company confirms

With the phone having already been confirmed ahead of an MWC 2014 formal unveiling, LG has now revealed that the LG G Pro 2 will feature a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation.

Making the announcement via its official blog, the Korean manufacturer has teased further LG G Pro 2 specs, focussing on the handset’s camera collection which will also see a 2.1-megapixel sensor present on the front of the phone.

As well as improving the phone’s primary snapper with the inclusion of optical image stabilisation, the LG blog post has revealed that the upcoming phone will benefit from 4K video recording capabilities, echoing the capabilities of the rival Samsung Galaxy Note 3 launched last year.

“LG G Pro 2 will be added to by a variety of camera UX features,” the company wrote in its blog before detailing how the phone will host the ability to shoot slow-motion video content, 20 photo image bursts and feature improved flash management.

Despite having confirmed the phone’s name and planned February unveiling, this marks the first time any of the handset’s official specs have been discussed.

Although concrete details are still somewhat hard to come by, it has been suggested that the LG G Pro 2 will sport a 6-inch, 1080p Full HD display, up on the original handset’s 5.5-inch offering.

Elsewhere, the LG G Pro 2 specs sheet has been tipped to feature a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, similar to that on the LG G2, 3GB of RAM and Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat OS. LG’s now customary rear-mounted volume controls also look set to feature.

Far from the only high-end handset heading for an MWC 2014 unveiling, early today Samsung teased that the long awaited Samsung Galaxy S5 release date will be held on February 24.

Windows Phone 9 release date news and rumors

Windows Phone 8 is over a year old now, yet we still know very little about Windows Phone 9.

Windows Phone 9

Originally it was expected to be with us by the end of 2013 as it was thought that Microsoft may adopt the annual software cycle made popular by Apple in an attempt to keep its mobile OS fresh and, more importantly, relevant.

That didnt happen, but from the information that weve been able to gather so far it looks like Windows Phone 9 could be a massive overhaul, so its not surprising that its taken over a year.

Before 9 however it looks like were going to get Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft looks set to announce 8.1 at its Build conference in April 2014, while further leaks highlight that Windows Phone 8.5 may also be on the cards.

Were scouring the web everyday to bring you all the latest on Windows Phone 9 and well be constantly updating the information below to give you the best picture of whats to come.

Windows Phone 9 release date

Initial rumors suggested that the Windows Phone 9 release date would be sometime in 2013, with reports claiming it would arrive just in time for Christmas, but as you might have noticed, Christmas has been and gone and were now in a Windows Phone 9-less 2014.

Other reports reckon Microsoft will kill off Windows Phone 8 by September 2014, giving an indication that while it didnt make it out the gates in 2013, version 9 could well be on its way very soon.

That seems more likely and not only because it wouldnt require time travel to be true. The most recent release date rumors come from Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, who posted to Twitter that Windows Phone 9 will launch in the second half of the year. He correctly predicted Microsofts acquisition of Nokia, so he could be worth listening to.

The update was also being referred to as Windows Phone Blue, a development name which mirrors an update to Microsofts new Windows 8 desktop platform - but its turned out that Windows Phone Blue is actually Windows Phone 8.1.

As weve already mentioned, 8.1 is set to appear this spring according to an announcement from Microsofts Vice President Joe Belfiore at MWC.

Windows Phone 9 or just Windows 9?

Were seeing reports that suggest Microsoft may look to ditch the divide between its smartphone platform and the one it uses for tablets and PCs - rolling them all into one tidy bundle called Windows 9.

One suggestion is that the Windows Blue upgrade will see Windows 8 merged with Windows Phone in an attempt to tackle Googles Android/Chrome combination which is growing ever stronger.

Alternatively we could instead get the aforementioned Windows 9 all-in-one system after a Microsoft employee stated "currently testing Windows 9 OS on Nokia, HTC and Qualcomm device" on their LinkedIn profile.

Eldar Murtazin has something to say on this subject too, tweeting that Windows Phone 9 will be the same on phones and tablets, replacing Windows RT, though he made no mention of Windows 8, so presumably that will still be separate.

Windows Phone 9 features

Murtazin also has some insight into the design of Windows Phone 9. Apparently it will be a complete overhaul which will remove the tile based Metro interface that Windows Phone is currently known for.

That would make sense if Microsoft plans on using the same interface for both phones and tablets. Murtazin went on to say that the interface would be more influenced by Android than iOS.

Windows Phone 9 devices

One of the big issues with Windows Phone 8 was that you couldnt get it on your Windows Phone 7 handset, instead you were lumped with Windows Phone 7.8.

Its thought that Windows Phone 9 wont be so restrictive, with Windows Phone 8 users in line to get the upgrade which means you shouldnt have to worry about picking up a Nokia Lumia 1520 or HTC 8X.

Nokia Lumia 1320 UK release date confirmed for February 24

A Nokia Lumia 1320 UK release date has been confirmed, with the 6-inch Windows Phone handset set to hit British retailers on February 24.

Despite having been officially unveiled alongside the high-end Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia 2520 back at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi last October, the ‘budget’ phablet that is the Nokia Lumia 1320 is now heading to UK for the first time.

“We are building on the continued success of the Lumia range by looking to offer the latest Windows Phone in a large-screen smartphone format at a highly competitive price,” Conor Pierce, VP of Nokia in the UK & Ireland said in making the launch announcement.

He added: “The Nokia Lumia 1320 brings a cost effective addition to our large screen Windows Phone portfolio.”
Despite much talk of the handset’s ‘competitive price’, Nokia has as yet failed to confirm exactly how much the inbound Nokia Lumia 1320 will set wannabe owners back.

Following the likes of the Nokia Lumia 1020, the Lumia 1320 is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 operating system, with the usual collection of HERE Maps access and SkyDrive storage options thrown into the mix.

Playing host to a 6-inch IPS display, the Nokia Lumia 1320 has cut corners and saved pennies in packing just a 1280 x 720p resolution, down on the 1080p Full HD screen in the 1520.

Powered by a 1.7-inch dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, the Nokia Lumia 1320 sits firmly in the realms of a mid-range smartphone, with 1GB of RAM joined by 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 64GB.

Despite Nokia having become synonymous with impressive phone cameras in recent times, the Nokia Lumia 1320 packs just a 5-megapixel rear-mounted snapper alongside a secondary, 0.3-megapixel VGA offering up front. The handset is kept going by a 3400mAh lithium-ion battery.

With the Nokia Lumia 1320 release date having been confirmed for February 24, the same day that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to be unveiled, Nokia has revealed the phone will be available through a number of outlets, including EE, Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Mobile.

Kings Can Fly Android Game Review

Take your airships around the world in this lighthearted and enjoyable puzzle game

We first saw the Kings Can Fly promo video a few months back and since then we’ve been waiting for the Firedroid developers to release their game…. the wait is now over!  Check out its good points below…

Gameplay

You’re a king who has finished conquering the kingdom and the state of peace is sending you to sleep.  So what do bored rulers do?  Obviously they listen to their young and beautiful assistants who tell them they should go on one last trip and see the world from high in the sky!
Being the almighty ruler of your domain, you set out with a convoy of airships and you need to travel the world going through all the checkpoints.  But of course you can’t just sit and wait for the wind direction to suit you before you set off… oh no… you’re the king… so you will create your own wind eddies!  That’s right you set out in your airship and then you strategically put down directional fans, lift fans and whirlwinds (yes that’s not a typo!) in order to guide your balloons to the docks.  After you have all your equipment in place then you open the gates and see if the wind currents are correct to fly you to your goal.

At this point the game probably still sounds weird because you’d think that a civilisation which is amazing enough to make airships (which can survive whirlwinds!) would also be clever enough to make them fly in any direction… but nope.  For some reason they were in such a rush to make these machines that they can only travel in straight lines. This explains why they need to throw contraptions around the map in order to redirect the balloons.  Luckily for us, this creates a very unique little puzzle game which is enjoyable and yet challenging at the same time.

Intuitive Controls

I love developers who put time and care into controls because it can make or break a game.  In this case the Firedroid developers have gone to town with the camera controls and they’ve given their players all the bells and whistles: there’s basic single touch and drag for camera panning; then there’s pinch to zoom; they’ve got multi-touch twist to pivot the camera; and finally there’s multi-touch for camera elevation.  Of course this is just a nice to have which makes the game easier to play, but the attention to detail has also gone into the fan placement.  It’s very clear how to put a fan down and the choice of which direction it’ll be blowing is obvious too.  I’m particularly happy that the directional fan buttons will auto-rotate as you spin your view around.

Sweet Graphics & Sounds

This is a great little pathing puzzle game which is put in a beautiful fully rendered 3D environment (yet another Unity engine success!).  Personally I find the model graphics to be just right… not too detailed… but still delicate enough to be pretty.  They’re also subtly animated to bring the whole game to life.  Though I must say, what really impresses me is how the 2D graphics and the in game 3D meld together easily.  The themed stylisation has really worked some magic and the quality music really sets the scene for a relaxing fantasy game.

Puzzle Problems

Personally I’ve found that some of the puzzle concepts within Kings can Fly and the core methods to solve them are very much like a Sokoban puzzle.  The difference is that you tend not to go back on your old routes and instead you’ll keep heading forwards.  Using Sokoban elimination methods will let you figure out where to place the guidance fans.  My only negative about the puzzles are that they seem either really easy or really hard… there’s not much inbetween.
As with all puzzle games there’s the concern that one would get stuck on a level and not be able to progress.  But the developers have tackled this in multiple ways i) there are multiple routes on the level map (which means you don’t need to complete all the levels), ii) there’s a tips button.  If you activate the game tip within the game then flags will appear, thus telling you where you should put your wind devices.  This way you’ll never get stuck, and you’ll always have something to play.

Full / Free:  The Free version of the game has adverts and 13 levels. [Ed: Adverts were removed from the free version!]  The Full game has 60 levels and we think its worth it if you like puzzle games.  To be honest, we’re not sure if the first 13 levels are a good reflection of how difficult the puzzles are or of how good the game is.

Rating: 4/5 Kings Can Fly is a superb and unique puzzle game which lets you feel the love and care of the developers.  This brain taxing game will definitely keep you occupied for a good while!

Kings Can Fly Tips and Tricks:

  • If you get stuck with planning the route from beginning to end, then try backwards planning and set the route from end to beginning instead.
  • There are often times when puzzles seem impossible.  In those cases then look carefully at where you can position your fans.  Have you definitely followed through on all your logic correctly?  You’ll often find that there may be some more alternatives at the beginning of your route.
  • Whenever a puzzle has you stumped and you think there’s no redirections possible, then take a step back and look at the overall map.  The maps have little islands of land or arbitrarily placed tornados.  So if you’re not utilising them then you may be doing something wrong.
  • In addition to trying to use the objects you’ve been given, then also tend towards planning out long and convoluted routes.  Try and think the following: “I’m the king and I’ve got tons of cash, so I want a scenic route around the map before going to the docks…” and that might help you solve the puzzles better.

Microsoft goof allows anyone to grab upcoming Windows 8 1 update

Too impatient to wait until next month to download the first big update to Microsofts latest desktop OS? If you know where to look, you might not have to - but then again, you may not want to just yet.

Windows 8.1 update

Mashable caught wind of a release to manufacturing (RTM) build of the forthcoming Windows 8.1 Update 1 making the rounds of public cloud storage services after mistakenly being released by none other than Microsoft themselves.

Although the update wont be released to the public at large until April 8, the leaked build is what manufacturers use to make sure their hardware is ready to go, especially for PCs that will ship with the latest and greatest version already installed.

Adventurous types wont have to wait nearly that long, since the RTM build of Update 1 is now available for download, assuming you know where to look.

Mega leak

The problem began with Microsofts enthusiasm for getting Update 1 into the hands of its employees, using the public Windows Update servers to post the build with a file name that wouldnt be obvious to outsiders.
That tactic apparently backfired, allowing non-employees to access and download the files using little more than a "simple software tweak," and it didnt take long for those files to get uploaded to cloud storage lockers such as Mega.

But just because you can download now, doesnt mean you should: The report notes the RTM build is likely missing many "hardware-specific drivers" as well as links to services that have yet to be updated, making Update 1 a dubious prospect at the moment.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 will include improvements to the so-called "modern" UI including the ability to boot straight into the Desktop, the return of shutdown on the Start screen and a more familiar task bar that aims to unify the old and new user interfaces.

Sony cradle transforms smartphones into multimedia in car dashboards

Sony has quietly announced the Sony XSP-N1BT, a smartphone cradles receiver that turns them into in-car dashboards.

The Sony XSP-N1BT is the first ever double-DIN Smartphone Cradle Receiver that transforms multiple smartphone brands into a touchscreen display and multimedia system for your car.

Clamping your smartphone in place, the Sony XSP-N1BT connects to your phone via Bluetooth or USB. Once mounted, your smartphone becomes your car’s touchscreen multimedia system.

The controls on the smartphone’s touchscreen are simplified via Sony’s App Remote interface, so you still get a variety of features but more easily accessible when driving or riding shotgun.

Sony’s App Remote also allows the Sony XSP-N1BT and your smartphone to accept voice commands.

The Sony XSP-N1BT also comes with an IR remote for connecting to USB, CD and tuner sources without your smartphone docked.

What’s more, the Sony XSP-N1BT also enables you to charge your phone via USB. It even offers wireless charging for Xperia smartphones like the Sony Xperia Z1, thanks to its magnetic connector.

iPhone 5 sells twice as fast as Samsung Galaxy S4

With Samsung said to have already shipped 20 million Samsung Galaxy S4 units, latest figures have revealed Apple’s iPhone 5 sold twice as fast at launch as the Android powerhouse.

The latest repose in the on-going iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S4 rivalry, analysts have stated that Apple’s flagship phone sold twice as fast as its leading rival, shipping 20 million units in just 25 days from launch.

According to ISI Group Analyst Brian Marshall, “over the first 25 days of iPhone 5 availability, Apple shipped 805,000 units per day. In contrast, Samsung shipped less than half of that — about 333,000 Galaxy S4 units — per day.”

Despite Samsung shipping a hefty 20 million Samsung Galaxy S4 units during the handsset’s opening two months on sale, the flagship phone has been plagued by reports that sales of the Samsung Galaxy S3 follow-on are lower than early predictions had anticipated.

With Apple’s latest smartphone offering highlighting the Cupertino based company’s continued brand appeal, the iPad mini maker announced last year that iPhone 5 sales topped 5 million units during the phone’s opening weekend alone, up on both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

According to UK sales figures announced earlier this week, the iPhone 5 remains the UK’s most popular smartphone, outselling the Samsung Galaxy S4 which is said to be struggling to reach the same lofty heights as its predecessor.

He added: “The fact the S4 is tracking below analysts’ expectations could explain why the South Korean giant has brought the launches of its Galaxy S4 Zoom, S4 Active and S4 Mini to the fore - a trio of smartphones targeting specific sectors of the market with a laser-like focus.”

KitKat and Sense 6 0 release dates for HTC One leaked

If youre getting bored with your HTC One then good news, there are a couple of software updates on the horizon for the flagship smartphone.

HTC confirmed on its Twitter feed that US-based HTC One owners can expect the Android 4.4 KitKat update to land within the next week, which means it cant be too far off the rest of the world.

The tweet in question reads: "Were getting close. Final KitKat software has entered carrier labs for final testing, and we expect certification next week."

This is hardly a surprise, as HTC had revealed it planned to get the KitKat update out to One handsets in February - so it looks like the manufacturer is bang on schedule.

We need more Sense!

With the HTC M8 - the successor to the One - hotly tipped for an arrival in the next couple of months sporting both Android 4.4 KitKat and the new Sense 6.0 UI, questions are being raised over whether its predecessor will also get the new version of Sense.

Apparently Sense 6.0 is due to land on the HTC One during summer or autumn of 2014 - thats if you believe the leaked software update plans posted by @LlabTooFeR - while older handsets such as the One X, One X+ and One S will miss out on all the goodies.

Qualcomm predicts 4K phones are the next big thing

Chipset manufacturer Qualcomm has suggested that 4K phones will be the industry’s next big area of progression, a move that is closer than you might expect.

With handsets having progressed through having 720p HD and 1080p Full HD displays in less than 18 months, Qualcomm has predicted that it won’t be long until 4K phones are the dominant force of the high-end mobile scene.

“I think 4K is one of the primary things you are seeing from us,” Tim McDonough, Qualcomm’s Vice President of Marketing said speaking with TrustedReviews on the future of smartphones.

“4K is pretty cool because it means that not only can you do 4K video, but once you can push that number of pixels and the chip has the ability to do 4K video, anything that is multimedia related – think about gaming – that gets better too.”

With chipsets set to be at the heart of the introduction of true 4K phones, McDonough has teased that the first 4K handsets might not be too far off, despite 4K TVs still being in their infancy.

“In November we announced Snapdragon 805, the next-generation of 800. Our shorthand for that is that it is the Ultra HD mobile processor and it runs Ultra HD. It will shoot it with video, it will play it back, it will play it back with surround sound and it will run an Ultra HD UI,” he said.

“It has already sampled and we said the first half of 2014 [for devices to launch].”

Detailing the move to 4K he added: “When you think of how many pixels it is running on screen, it is an incredibly competent processor. If you can put Ultra HD in a phone, you can basically put it in anything as this is the most challenging environment to design a chip for.”

While recent Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have claimed the phone will land with a 2K resolution display in tow, last year the Korean manufacturer bestowed its latest phablet with the ability to shoot 4K video.

Discussing this breakthrough moment towards truly 4K phones, McDonough stated: “The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 today has a Snapdragon in it and shoots in 4K because of that Snapdragon. That is the first toe in the water and I think you will see a lot more of it.”

Highlighting the rapid progression the smartphone industry has made to 4K, the Qualcomm VP added: “As soon as you think it is going to slow down, you are generally proven wrong.

“I once said that ‘now we’ve got 720p on our smartphone screens isn’t that good enough?’ I was so wrong. 720p was the standard for what, six, nine months.

“If they can do 4K you kind of get to the point where it is ‘what can’t they do’. What I think will be interesting is will your phone go from 4K to 8K.”

CarbonROM latest Android 4 4 2 for Nexus 5 How To Install it

Got a Nexus 5 and want to install a custom rom because stock rom is giving poor performance stock ROM does not have features that you want or it is not customisable? If yeah, then yep, you are at right place! Heres a latest custom rom for Nexus 5.
The ROMs name is CarbonROM, so dont call it CarbonROM ROM because it sounds awkward. Anyway, to our senior XDA Member PippoX3 for developing this fantastic ROM. Also the ROM is stable and based on Android 4.4.2 latest Kit Kat OS!
My friend, Rakesh got Nexus 5 and I rooted it for him and flashed CyanogenMod 11.0 custom ROM in his Nexus 5. The performance of this device excellent because of super fast SnapDragon chipset. Anyway, he was enjoying the CM ROM but he asked me to search any other ROM because he found CM boring (I dont know why!) so I was googling and found the CarbonROM and I found it interesting because it was based on OmniROM! Omni ROM is better than CyanogenMod, said my friend. He said he liked the ROM because of these features:

  • Static like call notification: You get calls and hate that full screened calling screen? Even I hate that because of its size and when I am doing something important, someone always calls me, I dont know why they call me at time only! but in this ROM, you will get a static or card like call
  • Better and cool multitasking: Simple swiping left or right is boring, right? but in this ROM, heres HTC like multitasking which makes it more cool and fancy.
  • Better and advanced audio settings: Adjust your bass, treble, loudness etc. easily with in-built audio settings.
  • Customizable ROM: You can customize your settings like statusbar, buttons, interface, etc.
  • Stuffed with many applications like: Focal, SuperSU etc.
  • Impressive ActiveDisplay.
  • Kernels supported: Try it with your any custom kernel like: ElementalX, Franco or any other custom kernel you like.
  • Mixed versions: This ROM is mixed version of AOSP, CyanogenMod, AOKP ROM etc. so you can get most of the features in this ROM only!
There are other tons of other features that you wont get in other Custom ROMs, you can explore them easily by flashing this ROM.

Some screenshots of this cool ROM:

(Your ROM will be in English or whichever language you want! Just go to settings, and change your language there, or follow some YouTube guides to change your language.)
These are just basic screenshots and dont judge the ROM on these screenshots, original ROM is superb!
