1954 Ferrari 375 Plus sells for record 18 million at Goodwood
Among all the action at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this past weekend, Bonhams held its classic car auction, bringing in a massive $38.4 million in sales. And this was undoubtedly the highlight.
Bearing the chassis number 0384 AM, this 1954 Ferrari 375-Plus has a storied racing history, competing that year in such events as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and the Silverstone endurance race, where the late José Froilán Gonzalez drove it to victory. One of only five made, the 375 Plus packed a 4.9-liter V12 with 330 horsepower under aluminum barchetta bodywork by Pininfarina. It was subsequently owned by Kleenex scion Jim Kimberly, trading hands between owners on both sides of the Atlantic and was the subject of a legal dispute over its ownership four years ago.
With the dispute now resolved and after heated competition between two bidders, the Ferrari finally sold for £10.7 million, equivalent to $18.2 million at todays rates and accounting for nearly half of the days sales totals. Other highlights included a 1902 De Dietrich 16-HP "Paris-Vienna" Rear-Entrance Tonneau and a a 75 Lamborghini Countach, each of which sold for around $1.7 million â" the latter eclipsing the example that Bonhams also recently sold for $1.2 million.
27 Jun 2014, The Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale: Collectors Motor Cars and Automobilia
- The brutally fast 1954 Ferrari 375-Plus led the pack at £10.7 million ($18.2 million USD)
- Sale achieved £22.6 million ($38.4 million USD)
- Ancient classic: 1902 De Dietrich sold for astounding £998,300
- Modern classic: 1975 Lamborghini Countach sells for £953,500
Bonhams annual Festival of Speed Sale saw spectacular results, with the Fearsome Four-Nine Ferrari 375-Plus battled out between bidders, and the hammer finally falling at £10.7 million ($18.2 million USD).
Robert Brooks, Bonhams Co-Chairman, said: "Weve had a truly diverse range of spectacular motor cars at our Sale this year, causing great excitement in the sale room for both spectator and bidder alike, and achieving an outstanding result."
"With a total of £22.6 million worth sold in four hours, its been another fantastic Festival of Speed for Bonhams"
Bonhams and Goodwood racing car historian Doug Nye, said: "This Sale has offered a phenomenal range of really special and important cars with their various classes. Above all, each of the prime cars offered has links with some of the greatest racing drivers of all time. Names like Jim Clark, Graham Hill, John Surtees and so many more. Its always a pleasure to see new owners delight as the gavel falls. After all, theyre winners too."
A 1902 De Dietrich - formerly part of the Michael Banfield Collection (over 1,000 lots from which were sold by Bonhams earlier this summer) - achieved at Goodwood today an astounding £998,300 ($1.7 million USD). Few cars can have come to light as spectacularly as this magnificent veteran, which was discovered during World War Two when a German bomb demolished the stable in which it had been sleeping on blocks since 1912. With just four owners from new, the powerful four-cylinder 4078cc De Dietrich is identical in specification to the works racers built for the 1902 Paris-Vienna challenge.
From ancient to modern, the Bonhams sale supplied all tastes. One of the most iconic sports cars of the 20th Century - a 1975 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopio Coupé - sold for a new world record £953,500 ($1.6 million USD).

Memorial Day Is One of the Most Popular for Car Thefts Inilex Warns
Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) May 22, 2014
Inilex®, a leading provider of automotive telemetry solutions, warns car owners that Memorial Day is one of the top five holidays for car thefts, with thieves eager to prey on those who leave their vehicles unattended for long periods of time as they party, participate in outdoor activities and travel. A few simple tips can help car owners keep their vehicles safe over the holiday weekend, or to at least mitigate their damages if they fall victim to auto theft.
The National Insurance Crime Bureauâs holiday theft report shows that 2,078 cars were reported stolen in the United States on Memorial Day 2012, the last year for which data is available. Christmas Day reported the lowest theft rates of any major holiday, with just 1,347 vehicles stolen.
Overall, auto thefts are on the rise. The FBIâs Uniform Crime Reporting Program released statistics showing that U.S. auto thefts rose in 2012 for the first time in eight years, and more than $4.3 billion was lost nationwide to motor vehicle thefts.
Victims of car theft, even those with quality insurance, can expect to pay more than $8,000 in out-of-pocket costs associated with their deductibles, lost personal items, loaner vehicles and other fees, as depicted in this infographic, âThe Real Cost of Car Theft.â As such, it is imperative that motorists either prevent a theft or recover their stolen vehicles as quickly as possible.
âMemorial Day can be a field day for car thieves who are out to take advantage of unsuspecting car owners that leave for three-day trips or even prolonged get-togethers with friends and family,â said Michael Maledon, CEO of Inilex. âFor one, people tend to leave their cars in foreign locations all day or overnight while theyâre out enjoying themselves. It can also be difficult to distinguish a would-be thief because many neighborhoods see an influx in visitors over the holiday weekend.â
Inilex offers these five tips to help protect car owners from thievery this Memorial Day:
1. Take a cab both to and from your Memorial Day party, rather than leaving your car at your destination and cabbing it home. A car left overnight is an open invitation to lurking thieves.
2. Many people park their cars in different neighborhoods to attend barbecues, parties and outdoor events. If youâre leaving your car in a foreign location, make sure to park in a well-lit, populated area, such as a busy parking lot. Not only is this safer for your car, but it is also safer for you walking to and from it.
3. Double check that your doors are locked, windows are rolled up and do not leave an extra key in or around your car. If you plan to leave your car parked in front of your house for a long period of time while youâre away, make plans for a neighbor to periodically check on it.
4. Do not store anything of value in your car or, at a minimum, keep it in the trunk or out of sight. Not only is it an open invitation for crooks, but most car insurance wonât cover these items if theyâre stolen.
5. Install a GPS-enabled device that can instantly track your car. If your vehicle is stolen, you want the ability to find it immediately so the thief can be caught and your car can be recovered before itâs stripped. As a bonus, most insurance companies will offer a discount on your insurance premium if your vehicle is equipped with a theft-recovery device.
Inilex manufactures and sells SkyLINK â" an intelligent vehicle recovery device that uses GPS and cellular technologies to locate stolen vehicles in real time. Unlike other car theft-recovery devices, SkyLINK provides broad, nationwide coverage and it works with all law enforcement agencies.

Petrolicious finds an oasis of Chevy SS models in the desert
The things we are interested in while young often grow into passions later in life. Take Mark Lundquist for example, whose car collection is highlighted in a new video from Petrolicious. Out of high school in the late 1960s, he worked at a gas station and filled up many of the eras most prized muscle cars. He wanted one but couldnt afford it until years later after his kids went to college. Now, he finally has his dream collection, which includes two classic Chevrolet Super Sports.
First, there is a sleeper 65 Malibu SS with a fuel-injected 502-cubic-inch Chevy big block crate engine, making 502 horsepower and 567 pound-feet for torque hiding under the hood. The car might not scream out about its power at first glance, but it has enough muscle to hit Lundquist in the head with the sun visor whenever he gets on the throttle.
His other SS is a 72 Chevelle. He bought it bone stock with a 402-cubic-inch big block engine. Since the purchase, Lundquist redid the interior and had it painted, but he kept it otherwise as it left the factory. Both cars reside in a special garage full of automotive memorabilia in Joshua Tree, CA. If youre a fan of big ole American muscle, then scroll down to check out the video.

Motorsports Sauber keeps Gutierrez for next season names Sirotkin as test driver
As we put the 2013 Formula One World Championship behind us and gear up for next season, the final seats left vacant have been rapidly filling up. And the latest to confirm its driver lineup is Sauber.
The Swiss team, formerly owned by BMW, announced it was bringing Adrian Sutil on board last week, and was thought to be bringing in Russian rookie Sergey Sirotkin to partner with the senior German pilot. But instead they have named Sirotkin as their reserve/test driver, and kept Mexican driver Esteban Gutierrez in the race seat for at least one more season. We would not, however, be surprised to see Sauber promote Sirotkin for a one-off drive in the inaugural Russian Grand Prix next season.
A former GP3 champion, Gutierrez served as Saubers test driver in 2012. He was promoted to the race seat for this past season, scoring a best finish of seventh place at the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix and finishing ahead in the standings of all the rookies on the grid. He carries with him the much-needed sponsorship money from Mexican telecom giant Telmex, which will continue to sponsor the team. Scroll down for the trio of announcements below.
21.12.2013 - Hinwil, 21st December 2013 - The Sauber F1 Team is pleased to announce it will continue its partnership with Telmex. It will stay Premium Partner with the logo of the Mexican telecommunications company continuing to have a significant presence on the cars.
Carlos Slim Domit, Telmex Chairman:
"We at Telmex and Telcel are very proud to continue being part of the Sauber F1 Team to keep consolidating our succesful history in motorsport, particularly in Formula One and our driver development programme for Mexican and Latin drivers such as Esteban Gutiérrez, a great young talent, friend and human being."
Monisha Kaltenborn, Team Principal:
"We are proud that three years ago Telmex chose the Sauber F1 Team to enter Formula One with, and that our partnership has been an instant success. We are very pleased to be able to continue the good cooperation, and think this is also a very good fit looking at a possible Grand Prix in Mexico. Telmex has been involved on different levels of motorsport for a number of years in various categories. We are pleased to be able to contribute to its vision on the top level of motorsports, and we are looking forward to further develop and strengthen our partnership with the corporation."
Telmex is a corporation made up of Teléfonos de México, S.A.B. de C.V. and subsidiaries that provide telecommunications services in Mexico. The companys service coverage comprises the operation of the nations most complete local and long-distance networks. Additionally, Telmex offers services like connectivity, Internet access, co-location, web hosting and interconnection services to other telecommunications operators.

Esteban Gutiérrez completes the Sauber F1 Team driver line-up for 2014
21.12.2013 - Hinwil, 21st December 2013 - The Sauber F1 Team is pleased to announce that Esteban Gutiérrez will stay on for the 2014 season, completing the driver line-up together with Adrian Sutil.
The Mexican first tested with the team at Jerez in late 2009. The following year the talented youngster was signed as affiliated driver, and 2013 saw him in his debut season as a Formula One driver finishing 16th as the best rookie in the drivers championship.
Monisha Kaltenborn, Team Principal:
"We are pleased Esteban will drive for us in 2014, because we believe he is a talented young racing driver. Last season he experienced first hand how hard it can be for a rookie to step into Formula One. Nevertheless, throughout the season he improved significantly in qualifying as well as in the races and finished the year as the best rookie in the drivers championship. Often the results didnt fully reflect his performances. I am confident Esteban will be able to use his experiences to gain results, and this will be helped by the fact he is very well acquainted with every member of the race team."
Esteban Gutiérrez:
"I am happy to be able to continue as a driver for the Sauber F1 Team. It was a steep learning curve last season, but by working closely with the team I was able to improve continuously. It will be my fourth year with the team, the second as a racing driver, and I feel comfortable in taking the next step. The technical challenges in 2014 will be massive. Therefore it will be even more important to know well the people you are working with. I will do my very best to improve even more and support the team the best way I can."

Sergey Sirotkin becomes test driver for the Sauber F1 Team
21.12.2013 - Hinwil, 21st December 2013 â" The Sauber F1 Team is pleased to announce Sergey Sirotkin as its test driver for the 2014 season.
Sergey joined the team in August 2013 and has been gaining more and more insight into Formula One since then. He has spent several days at the factory in Hinwil and has been working with the engineers. In late September he drove a demo-run at the new track in Sochi, which will host the Russian Grand Prix in 2014. In October he tested a 2009 Ferrari at Fiorano. The Sauber F1 Teams aim is to prepare Sergey for his debut in Formula One.
Monisha Kaltenborn, Team Principal:
"We have been working with Sergey since August, and he has been able to gain more and more insight into Formula One. Now he is taking the next step towards the top level of motorsport in his new role as a test driver. Our experience of him is as a very focused, calm and talented driver. Now we will continue to support him, including obtaining his super license. Our goal remains to prepare him for a debut in Formula One."
Sergey Sirotkin:
"Its a big chance for me to become the test driver for the Sauber F1 Team. I will work hard to improve myself and to extract the maximum out of this opportunity. Formula One is very complex, so it is important to get an opportunity like this. My main focus next year, however, will be the World Series by Renault, which is very competitive. This will give me the chance to prepare even better in order to be ready for the next big step."

Audi CEO Stadler gets 5 year contract extension
Audi CEO Rupert Stadler will keep his seat at the top thanks to a contract extension. Volkswagen didnt divulge the length of the new contract, but German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said the term is five years. Stadler took over the current position in 2007 when current VW CEO Martin Winterkorn left it. That year the brand sold 93,506 in the US and 964,151 in total worldwide; last year it sold 158,061 in the US and 1,575,480 in total worldwide.
Even though the brand has managed only about half the US sales of its two main rivals, it led the charge globally through the first two months of this year. Over the next few years well see its US efforts increase with a $30.3-billion investment, 11 new models and the opening of its first North American plant. And right now it can make hay with its World Car of the Year award winner, the A3.
In addition to Stadler, VW sales boss Christian Klingler is said to have received a five-year contract extension, and VW China head Jochem Heizmann has earned another two years on the job.
